지식의 분류방법

방대한 지식을 어떻게 분류할 수 있을까?

Dewey Decimal classification(DDC)는 Melvil Dewey (December 10, 1851–December 26, 1931) 가 제안한 지식 , 더 엄밀히 말하면 도서관의 장서, 분류법이다. 이는 인류의 모든 지식을 10개의 대 주제와 그 밑에 각각 10개씩의 소주제, 그 밑에 각각 10개씩의 섹션으로 구분한다. 이는 계속 수정되어 오면서 오늘에 이르고 많은 도서관에서 도서 분류에 채택되고 있다.

    * 000 – Computer science, information, and general works
    * 100 – Philosophy and psychology
    * 200 – Religion
    * 300 – Social sciences
    * 400 – Language
    * 500 – Science
    * 600 – Technology
    * 700 – Arts and recreation
    * 800 – Literature
    * 900 – History and geography

예를 들면, 330 이 경제학이라면 + 9 는 지역적 연구이고, + 4 는 유럽을 나타내기 때문에 = 330.94는 유럽 경제학 관련 서적이 된다.973 이 미국이고 + 05 는 정기간행물이므로, 973.05는 미국에 대한 정기간행물이 될 것이다. 도서관에서는 이들 DDC  번호의 순서대로 도서를 정리해 나가면 된다.

이에 비해서 미국 의회 도서관이나 연구소 등에서는 독자적인 분류 시스템, LCC (Library of Congress Classification)을 사용한다.
