미국의 PBS의 경제 뉴스 프로그램인 나이틀리 비즈니스 리포트(Nightly Business Report, NBR)가 방송 30주년을 맞아 Univ. of Pennsylvania 와튼스쿨 웹진(Knowledge@Wharton)과 공동으로 실시한 설문 조사 결과이다. 30개의 발명품을 선정한 결과 최고의 신기술 1위에는 월드와이드웹(www) 기반의 무선 인터넷이, 2위에는 컴퓨터, 3위에는 휴대전화가 꼽혔다.


" 이번 조사는 전세계 250개 이상의 주요 시장 고객 등으로 상대로 이뤄졌고 그 결과 1200개가량의 제품이 추천됐다. 최종 30건을 선정하는 과정에 참여한 사람들은 디지털 기술, 진전된 의학 기술, 이동 통신이 지배하는 시대에서 '혁신'의 의미가 무엇인가를 주요 평가 기준으로 삼았다고 포브스는 전했다. " (서울신문 2009.2.25일자  나길회기자 kkirina@seoul.co.kr )

평균 순이익 10대 자영업 가운데 으뜸
슈퍼는 매출, 피시방은 순이익률 앞서

최근 경기 한파로 자영업자 수도 600만명 아래로 내려갔다. 그래도 국내 경제에서 자영업이 차지하는 비중은 여전히 막강한 편. 통계청 집계 경제활동인구가 2400만여명이므로 일하는 사람 넷 중 한 명이 자영업자다. 전체 취업자 중 자영업자 비중은 33.6%. 경제협력개발기구(OECD) 회원국 중 우리나라가 가장 높다.

소상공인진흥원이 2008년 11월 조사해 최근 발표한 ‘소상공인 경기동향 모니터링 조사 결과’를 보면 대한민국 자영업의 현주소를 담고 있다.

■ 음식점, 얼마나 많이 하나? 우리나라 자영업 10대 업종은? 음식업, 슈퍼마켓, 숙박업, 제과점, 이용업, 미용업, 세탁소, 욕탕업, 노래방, 피시방이다. 이 가운데 가장 많은 것은 단연 음식업. 한국을 처음 방문한 외국인들이 “웬 음식점이 이렇게 많냐?”며 놀라는 게 당연할 정도다. 전체 자영업의 16.4%가 식당이다. 2등은? 슈퍼마켓. 15.9%다. 나머지는 대부분 8~9%로 비슷한 수준. 종사자 연령이 가장 높은 자영업은 뭘까. 여관·모텔은 52.9살 목욕탕은 52.2살로 사업주 나이 1, 2위를 차지했다. 사업주의 종사 경력이 가장 긴 업종은? 이발소였다. 평균 20.3년. 다른 업종들과 비교가 안 된다. 두번째로 종사 경력이 긴 미용업의 10.7년보다 갑절가량이다. 노래방과 피시방은 사업주 경력이 가장 짧아 3.3~3.4년 정도였다.

■ 돈벌이는 어디가 낫나? 순이익만으로 따지면 가장 돈을 잘 버는 업종은 월평균 순이익 378만1천원인 여관·모텔로 나타났다. 하지만 매출액 대비 순이익률로 따지면 여관·모텔은 23.9%로 낮은 축에 낀다.

매출액순이익률이 가장 높은 곳은 피시방. 월평균 매출액 371만4천원에, 순이익은 192만원으로 매출액순이익률이 51.7%였다. 컴퓨터 등 초기 시설비용이 들어가지만 이후 관리비용이 적기 때문이다. 그러나 매출액이나 순이익 절대치로는 그다지 장사가 잘된다고 보기 어려운 업종이다. 매출액순이익률은 미용실(50.38%)·이발소(49.32%)·노래방(48.41%)·세탁소(45.32%) 등도 높았다. 노래방은 피시방과 이유가 비슷하고, 미용실·이발소·세탁소는 원재료가 많이 들어가지 않는 덕분이다.

반면 슈퍼마켓은 규모는 커도 알맹이는 빈 업종으로 나타났다. 슈퍼마켓의 월평균 매출액은 2418만2천원으로 가장 많았다. 하지만 순이익은 241만원에 불과해 매출액순이익률이 9.9%로 가장 낮았고, 다른 업종과 격차도 컸다. 목욕탕은 어려움이 많은 것으로 집계됐다. 최근 적자로 운영한다고 답한 가게가 31%로 세 집 중 한 집꼴이었다.

■ 다시 가게를 내도 이 업종을 비록 어려움은 많아도 자영업자들은 거의 대부분인 84.6%가 현재 사업을 유지하겠다고 답했다. 특히 여관·모텔은 94.3%가 사업을 접지 않고 계속하겠다고 응답했다. 사업주 나이가 많아 다른 일을 하기 어려운 측면도 있겠지만 다른 업종에 견줘 벌이가 나쁘지 않음을 보여주는 대목이다.
