Louis Armstrong이 처음으로 불렀고 1967년에 싱글로 발매되었던 곡이다.

당시 미국의 인종차별 문제, 월남전 등으로 사회적 갈등이 심화되어 있을때 낙관적이고 희망적인 분위기를 주기 위해서  흑인가수인 루이 암스트롱이 불렀다는 해석도 가능하다. 미국에서는 처음에는 음반이 별로 팔리지 않았지만 영국에서 싱글 차트 1등이 되면서 전세계적인 인기를 얻게 되었다. 

로빈 윌리엄스가 주연했던 영화 "굿모닝 베트남"에서 애절하게 흘러나오는 이 노래는 전쟁의 현실과 대비가 되었다.
