데이비드 레터먼(1947. 4. 12-)이 자신의 쇼 스탭인 여성과 연인관계였다가 그 일을 폭로하겠다는 협박편지를 받은 사실을 공개했고, 경찰은 그 협박편지가 에미상을 수상한 바 있는 TV 제작자이며 그 여인과 동거했던 Robert (Joe) Halderman (1958?-)이 보냈다는 것을 밝혀냈다.
화제의 여인은 Stephanie Birkitt (1975?-)으로 데이비드 레터맨의 토크쇼에서 'Girl Friday' 에 출연하기도 했었다. 20대 초반의 여성과 50을 바라보는 연예인의 불장난은 이렇게 뉴요커들의 가십거리가 되고 말았다.

New Hampshire native, interned at the show in 1996 while she was still a student. After graduating a year later, she did production work for CBS’ “48 Hours.” The unlikely pair’s relationship developed quickly. Letterman began calling Birkitt twice a week — and their conversations eventually became more personal, she said. “We’d talk about my weekend,” Birkitt told the Star-Telegram. “And he started asking if I had pictures from my weekend, so I showed pictures.” Birkitt was soon making periodic appearances on the show, often donning costumes and conducting light-hearted interviews.
